Mark said this while talking about how new balls often give a player an edge because they haven't soaked up much oil and, therefore, they drive hard through the pins. That extra drive might provide an extra strike every now and then instead of a tap, and that extra strike might separate those who make match play or the finals from those who don't.
Furthermore, an older ball that's soaked up a lot of oil might appear to read the lane well on its way to the pocket but not finish as strongly through the pocket and carry as well as a new ball that may or may not appear to be reading the lane as well.
